gill martin

Gill Martin was born in East London. After relocating to Bristol in 1967 she studied Applied Arts at Filton College and then went on to specialize in precise observational drawing and painting through the Botanical Artists Distance Learning Programme. Gill graduated with a distinction, and exhibited in the 2012 Society of Botanical Artists’ show in London.

Gill lives and works in Bristol. She has a studio at BV and is a keen traveller and walker, having recently completed the South West Coast Path. It is on her journeying that she makes sketches, takes photographs and gathers materials to use as an inspiration for her paintings. Sometimes her subjects are not always the most obvious; for instance in Perth, Australia she was particularly attracted by the markings on fallen eucalyptus leaves in Kings Park. Perhaps her city up-bringing has given Gill a heightened awareness of the intricacy and detail in even the most overlooked of plants.

Gill works mainly in watercolour on smooth, hot pressed paper as she finds its translucency particularly suitable when painting colourful flowers and leaves. However, she has also used graphite pencil, pen and ink and coloured pencils, and in her more recent work has experimented with mixed media, which she finds useful in depicting more textural subjects.
